Cruise Control - Inoperative
No.: TSB-03-17-004DATE: April, 2003
MODEL: 2003 Outlander
SUBJECT:
CRUISE CONTROL INOPERATIVE
PURPOSE
On some vehicles, the cruise may not set the desired speed, or the driver must hold the accelerator for five to ten seconds at the desired speed before releasing to set the cruise control. These conditions may be caused by improper operation of the cruise control vacuum pump. Check the cruise control vacuum pump operation as described in this bulletin. If the vacuum pump does not operate properly, replace it with the pump listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2003 Outlander models produced before 3/7/03
PROCEDURE
1. Install a vacuum gauge on the vacuum line between the pump and throttle actuator. Leave the throttle actuator disconnected from vacuum.
2. Lift up the vehicle on a hoist, high enough to raise the wheels off the ground.
3. Start the engine and move the gear selector to the "D" position. Increase speed to about 40 mph, then set the cruise control speed.
4. If the cruise control vacuum pump operation is normal, it should briefly produce at least 8' Hg vacuum and the vacuum needle should rise smoothly (without bouncing) when the cruise control speed is set. If it does not, replace the vacuum pump.
CAUTION
When installing the vacuum pump hoses, do not apply any lubricants. The lubricant could enter the pump and damage its internal valves.
