INSPECTION PROCEDURE 18: SHIFT INDICATOR DISPLAY SYSTEM

CIRCUIT OPERATION
PCM sends 3 signals to the combination meter. The combination meter then displays the current gear/speed according to the presence of this signal.

COMMENT
The cause is thought to be due to the shift switch assembly, combination meter, PCM malfunction or signal circuit defect.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (THE MOST LIKELY CAUSES FOR THIS CASE:)
^ Malfunction of the shift switch assembly
^ Malfunction of the combination meter
^ Damaged harness or connector
^ Malfunction of the PCM

a. Item 07: Shift indicator (1st)
b. Item 08: Shift indicator (2nd)
c. Item 09: Shift indicator (3rd)
d. Item 10: Shift indicator (4th)
^ The gear shift of the item number is shown on the combination meter.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the indicator operating properly?
YES: It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent.
NO: Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991958, check data list item 67: Select Switch, item 68: Shift Switch (Up), item 69: Shift Switch (Down).

2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Set scan tool MB991958 to data reading mode for following items.
a. Item 67: Select Switch
b. Item 68: Shift Switch (Up)
c. Item 69: Shift Switch (Down)

NOTE: The switches above are displayed, depending on the selector lever condition as shown in the table.

4. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the switch operating properly?
YES: Go to Step 3.
NO: Refer to Inspection Procedure 17: Shift Switch Assembly System.

STEP 3. Measure the voltage at PCM connector C-103 by backprobing.

1. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Set scan tool MB991958 to actuator test mode for following items.
a. item 09: Shift indicator (3rd)
b. item 10: Shift indicator (4th)

4. Do not disconnect connector C-103.

5. Measure the voltage between terminal 121, 125, 134 and ground by backprobing. Use scan tool MB991958 to check and see that the PCM terminal voltage is the same as the voltage specified in the table when showing the gear shift indication.
6. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the measured voltage with in the specified range?
YES: Go to Step 6.
NO: Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Check combination meter connector C-04, intermediate connector C-105 and PCM connector C-103 for loose, corroded or damaged terminals, or terminals pushed back in the connector.

Q: Are the connectors and terminals in good condition?
YES: Go to Step 5.
NO: Repair or replace the damaged components.

STEP 5. Check the harness for short circuit to ground between the combination meter connector C-04 (terminals 50, 51 and 52) and the PCM connector C-103 (terminals 134, 125, 121).

Q: Is the harness wire in good condition?
YES: Go to Step 9.
NO: Repair or replace the harness wire.

STEP 6. Measure the voltage at combination meter connector C-04.

1. Connect scan tool MB991958 to the data link connector.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
3. Set scan tool MB991958 to actuator test mode for following items.
a. item 09: Shift indicator (3rd)
b. item 10: Shift indicator (4th)

4. Disconnect connector C-04 and measure at the harness side.

5. Measure the voltage between terminal 50, 51 and 52 and ground. Use scan tool MB991958 to check and see that the combination meter terminal voltage is the same as the voltage shown in the table when the gear speed indication is shown.
6. Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Q: Is the measured voltage with in the specified range?
YES: Go to Step 9.
NO: Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check combination meter connector C-04, intermediate connector C-105 and PCM connector C-103 for loose, corroded or damaged terminals, or terminals pushed back in the connector.
