Recall - ABS Control Module Replacement: Overview

ABS CONTROL MODULE - SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

PURPOSE

The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) control module may cause the rear brakes to lock up during certain braking conditions. This could result in a loss of vehicle control and cause a crash without warning. Replace the ABS control module as described in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2006 Raider 4 wheel drive models equipped with ABS

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles telling them to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the ABS control module replaced. A copy of the customer notification letter is shown in this bulletin.

REQUIRED OPERATIONS

Before starting this campaign procedure, CHECK ON THE WARRANTY SUPERSCREEN to verify that the vehicle is an affected VIN for this campaign and that this campaign procedure has not already been completed.

Note:
The MUT-III scan tool must be used to initialize the new ABS control module after installation.

1. Record the radio presets and disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.

2. Locate the ABS control module under the Power Distribution Center. Clean the exterior of the ABS control module to prevent dirt from falling into the hydraulic control unit when the ABS control module is removed.





3. Pull up on the ABS control module harness connector lock and disconnect the wiring from the ABS control module.





4. Using a T-20 Torx driver, remove and discard the four ABS control module mounting screws.

5. Remove the ABS control module from the hydraulic unit.

6. Install the new ABS control module onto the hydraulic unit.

7. Install the four new ABS control module mounting screws included in the kit. Tighten the screws to 35 in/lbs. (4 Nm).

8. Connect the wiring harness to the ABS control module and push down on the connector lock to secure the connector.

9. Reconnect the negative battery cable and reset the radio presets.

10. Initialize the ABS control module as follows:

a. Connect the MUT-III Scan Tool to the data link connector located under the steering column.

b. Turn the ignition key to the "run" position (engine not running).





c. Select System select.





d. Select ABS. Then click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.





e. Select Misc. Function.





f. Select Initialize ECU. Then click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

g. The text box will read: "This routine is used to initialize the ECU."

^ Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

h. The text box will read: "Initialize ESP sensor."





^ Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

i. The text box will read: "Please verify that the vehicle is stationary, on level ground with the wheels straight and the brake pedal released."





^ Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

j. The text box will read: "Clearing Rolls Byte. Engine must not be running. Turn off engine and turn ignition to run position."





^ Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

k. The text box will read: ABS/ESP Initialization complete."





^ Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.





l. Select the Home icon to return to the Raider Main Menu.

11. Clear all DTCs as described below:





a. Select Special function.





b. Select All DTCs.





c. Click on the erase button at the bottom of the screen.





d. Verify there are now no DTCs listed.

Enter this campaign over the MDL using the Recall claim type menu option. Refer to the sample claim screens shown.

Retain all replaced control modules for at least five days beyond the claim payment date. Parts not requested after five days from the payment date may be scrapped.
