Procedure

PROCEDURE

DIAGNOSIS

Using the MUT-III, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed and read DTCs. If DTCs other than those listed in the Purpose section above are present, diagnose and repair them as necessary prior to proceeding further with this bulletin.

THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED TO REPROGRAM THE PCM.

^ Battery Charger

^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824

^ Laptop computer - 520924, 528535 or 547708

^ MUT-III main harness A (blue) - MB991910

^ USB 2.0 cable - MB991827

^ "Engine Compartment/Control Module" labels - p/n MSSF024G00

^ MEDIC-II at version 5.5 or higher, MUT-III STV at version 21.0 or higher.

^ Download update at the latest revision available.

PRELIMINARY STEPS

1. Open the hood and check near the VECI label to verify there is no modification label previously installed to indicate this TSB (TSB-09-13-009) reprogramming has already been completed.

2. If there is an underhood label indicating a different TSB number, check the ECU part number using the MUT-III.

^ Turn the ignition to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

^ Open RAIDER STV.

^ Select System Select.

^ Select PCM (NGC III Engine).

^ Select ECU Information.

^ Confirm the ECU Part Number.

^ Turn the ignition to the OFF position.

If the part number shown is listed in the Raider PCM (ECU) Software Part Number Chart shown at the end of this TSB, the PCM is already at the current level and this reprogramming procedure does not apply. Disconnect the MUT-III and diagnose using the service manual.

Confirm MEDIC-II or MUT-III Standalone Version and Download Status

For MEDIC-II users only:

Verify that the MEDIC-II is at version 5.5 and the most current download number.

NOTE:
As of September 29, 2009, the download number is M315.

a. If your MEDIC-II is at the most current download number, go to the Reprogramming Procedure.

c. If your MEDIC-II is at the most current download number, update your MEDIC-II as follows.

On the MEDIC-II main screen, click on Maintenance.

Click on Download. After the download completes, click on Cancel to exit the "Maintence" window.

GO TO THE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

For Stand-alone MUT-III users only:

If you have a stand alone Scan Tool (MUT-III), transfer the reprogramming data from the Reflash Update CD to your MUT-III laptop as follows:

a. With the MUT-III laptop on, close the Raider STV and MUT-III STV.

b. Install Reflash Update CD 10/08 into the laptop.

c. Follow the instructions displayed on-screen for loading the database onto your laptop.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle's battery.

BATTERY VOLTAGE MUST BE MAINTAINED BETWEEN 13.2 AND 13.5 VOLTS. CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE BATTERY AND CHARGE IT IF NECESSARY. CONNECT A BATTERY CHARGER SET TO CONTINUOUS CHARGE, TO THE BATTERY. DO NOT ALLOW THE CHARGER TO "TIME OUT" DURING THE REPROGRAMMING PROCESS.

DO NOT ALLOW THE CHARGING VOLTAGE TO EXCEED 13.5 VOLTS DURING THE PROCESS.

2. Connect the reprogramming equipment as follows:

a. Start the laptop computer.

b. Connect the USB cable to the VCI.

c. Connect the USB cable to the laptop.

d. Connect the blue MUT-III main harness to the VCI.

e. Connect the other end of the blue MUT-III main harness to the vehicle's data link connector.

f. Turn the VCI power switch ON. Verify the indicator lamp in the upper right corner of the screen is green.

NOTE:
If the USB cable is disconnected during this procedure, a warning message will display. Close the message display by clicking on the OK button.

3. Refer to the Raider PCM (ECU) Software Part Number Chart at the end of this bulletin, or the "Raider ECU Part Number & ECU Calibration" chart on the Mitsubishi Dealer Link in the Service Tech Resources page to identify the appropriate calibration for this programming.

4. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

5. Open RAIDER STV from the main page of the MUT- III.

6. In the Raider main menu, select Special Function.

7. Select ECU Reprogramming.

8. Select Automatic Reprogramming.

9. Select PCM (NGC III Engine).

Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

10. This window will pop up advising that the program will "Automatic search the data." Click on the check mark to continue.

11. Select the programming database (calibration) listed in the "New ECU P/N" column that matches the "New S/W Part #" column from the chart at the end of this TSB.

Click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

12. Click on the check mark to continue with reprogramming. It will take up to 10 minutes to complete reprogramming.

DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING PROGRAMMING REQUIRES THE PROCESS TO BE RESTARTED.

DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE RAIDER STV PROGRAM AT THIS POINT. ECU DAMAGE WILL OCCUR. FOLLOW THE MUT-III SCREEN DISPLAY MESSAGES TO RESTART THE PROGRAMMING PROCESS.

NOTE:
When PCM reprogramming is completed, TCM reprogramming will start automatically.

13. When programming is complete, this screen will display. Turn the ignition key off.

A window will pop up prompting you to turn the key ON within 20 seconds.

After turning the key ON, you will be taken to the next screen. Be patient as this takes some time.

14. This screen will display. Note the new part number (2006 50S V8 2WD spec part # shown) and confirm it matches the part number from the chart at the end of this TSB for the vehicle's specification.

15. Click on the check mark in the window to continue.

16. Click on the "UP" arrow at the bottom left of the screen to return to the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu.

Clear all DTCs as follows:

1. From the Special Functions menu, select All DTCs. The MUT-III will check for DTCs in all ECUs and display them. This may take a few minutes.

2. If DTCs are listed, click on the erase button at the bottom of the screen.

Any DTCs listed will be erased and rechecked to see if they return.

NOTE:
It is not uncommon for DTCs to be set in the PCM or other control units during reprogramming.

3. Verify no DTCs are listed. If there are, diagnose per the Service Manual.

Click on the "Home" icon to return to the main page.

4. the reprogramming procedure is complete. Turn the ignition to the "OFF" position and disconnect the MUT-III.

5. Use a permanent ball-point pen to enter the new S/W part number, your dealer code, this TSB number (TSB-09-13-009) and the current date on the Engine Compartment / Control Module Label (part no. MSSF024G00).

6. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from a vacant area near the VECI label, and affix the Engine Compartment label.
