Procedure

PROCEDURE

1. Replace the Torque Converter. Refer to section 23 of the applicable service manual for details.

2. Check the underside of the hood to verify that there is no label previously installed to indicate that this TSB reprogramming has already been done. If no label is present reprogram the PCM using the following instructions.

3. The following equipment is needed to reprogram the PCM for this concern:

^ MEDIC II at version 4.0A or higher.

^ MUT-III STV 17.0/RAIDER STV at version 3.5 or higher.

^ VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) - MB991824

^ MUT-III main harness A (blue) - MB991910

^ USB 2.0 cable - MB991827

^ "Engine Compartment/Control Module" labels - p/n MSSF-024G-00

4. Check that the MEDIC II of the MUT III software is to the appropriate level to successfully complete reprogramming,

For MEDIC II users ONLY:

1. Verify that the MEDIC II is at download M159 or higher.





a. If your MEDIC II Down-load is below M159 update your MEDIC II as follows.





2. On the MEDIC-II main screen click on "Maintenance".

3. Click on "Download". After the download completes click on "Cancel" to exit the "Maintenance" window.

GO TO REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

For Stand-alone MUT III users only:

If you have a stand alone Scan Tool (MUT-III), determine the version of the software and if necessary, install the MUT-III STV 17.0/ RAIDER STV 3.5 Upgrade CD to your MUT-III laptop.

1. Check the Raider STV version number:

a. I your Raider STV is version 3.5 or greater, go to the REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.





b. If your Raider STV version is below 3.5, go to Step 2 to update your database.

2. Install MUT-III STV 17.0/RAIDER STV 3.5 Upgrade CD to your MUT-III laptop as follows:

a. With the MUT-III laptop on close the Raider STV and MUT-III STV.

b. Install the MUT-III STV 17.0/RAIDER STV 3.5 Upgrade CD into the laptop.

C. Follow the instructions displayed on-screen for loading the database onto your laptop.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

BATTERY VOLTAGE MUST BE MAINTAINED BETWEEN 13.2 AND 13.5 VOLTS. USE A VOLTMETER TO CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE BATTERY. CHARGE THE BATTERY AS NECESSARY. CONNECT A BATTERY CHARGER ON A CONTINUOUS CHARGE DURING THE PROCESS. DO NOT ALLOW THE BATTERY CHARGER TO TIME OUT. DO NOT ALLOW CHARGING VOLTAGE TO EXCEED 13.5 VOLTS DURING THE PROCESS.

1. Connect the equipment as follows:

a. Start the laptop computer.

b. Connect the USB cable to the VCI.

c. When the laptop displays the MUT-III main screen connect the USB cable to the laptop.

d. Connect the blue MUT-III main harness to the VCI.

e. Connect the other end of the blue MUT-III main harness to the vehicle's data link connector.

f. Turn the VCI power switch ON. Verify that the indicator lamp in the upper right corner of the screen is green.

NOTE:
If the USB cable is disconnected during this procedure, a warning message will display. Close the message display by clicking on the OK button.

2. Refer to the attachment shown in this bulletin or the "Raider ECU Part Number & ECU Calibration" chart on the Mitsubishi Dealer Link in the Service Tech Resources page to identify the appropriate calibration for this programming.





3. Open Raider STV. In the Raider main menu select Special Function.





4. Select ECU Reprogramming.





5. Select Automatic Reprogramming.





6. Select PCM.

Then click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.





7. This window will pop up advising that the program will "Automatic search the data." Click on the check mark to continue.





a. If this screen displays the PCM has already been reprogrammed for this concern. If this screen indicates that the ECU part number is at/higher then 05094539AG FED or at/higher then 05094540AG (CAL) do not continue with this procedure.

Click the check mark to close the window and then click the HOME icon at the bottom left to return to the main menu.





8. Select the reprogramming database that has 05094539AG (Fed) or 05094540AG (CA) in the "New ECU P/N" column.

Then click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.





9. Click on the check mark to continue with reprogramming. It will take up to 10 minutes to complete reprogramming.

NOTE:
DO NOT DISTURB THE HARNESS CABLES OR CONNECTIONS. INTERRUPTION DURING REPROGRAMMING REQUIRES THE REPROGRAMMING PROCESS TO BE RESTARTED.





10. When reprogramming is complete this screen will display. Turn the ignition key OFF.

A screen will appear advising you to turn the key back on within 20 seconds.

Click on the check mark in the window to continue.





11. Then this screen will display (CA spec part # shown). Be sure to note the new part number. Click on the checkmark in the window to continue.





12. Using a ball-point pen enter the new ECU part number this TSB number (TSB-07-23-005) your dealer code and the current date on the Engine Compartment / Control Module Label (part no. MSSF-024G-00).

NOTE:
For Raider models, there is no vendor code or ROM ID to be recorded on the label.

13. Carefully remove all dirt and oil from a vacant area near the VECI label on the underside of the hood and affix the Engine Compartment label.

The Control Module Label is NOT used. It can be discarded.

14. Clear all DTCs as follows:

a. Return to the Raider main menu and select Special Function.





b. Select All DTCs





c. Click on the Erase button at the bottom of the screen.

d. Verify that there are now no DTCs listed.





Click on the "Home" icon to return to the main page.

TCC BREAK-IN PROCEDURE





1. Connect the MUT-III to the vehicle. In the Raider main menu select System Select.





2. Select PCM. Then click on the check mark at the bottom of the screen.





3. Select Misc Function.





4. Select TCC Break-in.

Click on the check mark at the bottom of the page to continue.

5. The window will change to one that reads:

"The Purpose of this function is to allow a technician to view the status of the Torque Convertor Clutch (TCC) break-in process stop the break-in process or start the break-in process once a new torque convertor clutch has been installed".





Click the check mark at the bottom of the page to continue.





6. In the TCC Break-in screen select the button that reads "View Current TCC Break-in Status", then click the check mark to continue.





7. The Current Break-in Status screen will display next.

If both the First Phase Break-in Complete and the Torque Convertor Break-in Complete fields are "True", go on to step 3 of this procedure.

If either or both read "False", the TCC Clutch Break-in procedure has not been completed. This reflash procedure cannot be completed until both fields show "True", must be completed prior to reflashing.





8. Return to the TCC Break-in screen and select the button that reads "Start TCC Break-in Process" then click the check mark at the bottom of the screen.

9. The next screen will read:





"This Option Is Only To Be Used If A New Torque Convertor Clutch Has Been Installed. If The Break-in Process Is Performed Unnecessarily Shortened Torque Convertor Clutch Life May Result."

Click the check mark at the bottom of the screen to continue or click the HOME icon to cancel.





10. A warning screen will appear stating Are You Sure You Want To Start TCC Break-in? This Option Can Shorten The Life Of A TCC Clutch That Has Already Been Broken In."

Click on the check mark to continue.

11. The next screen advises that the "Break-in Process Has Been Enabled."

Click on the check mark to continue. Then click on the HOME icon to compete the procedure.





Using the scan tool verify that torque convertor break in has been completed.

12. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the MUT III.
