No: TSB-09-52A-001

DATE: June, 2009

MODEL: 2004-09 Galant

SUBJECT:
DOOR TRIM PANEL MAP POCKET BUZZ OR NOISE WITH AUDIO UNIT AT HIGH VOLUME OR BASS

PURPOSE

Some customers may report a noise or buzz from either front door speaker. Contact between corner tabs of the map pocket and "+" shaped standoffs on the door trim panel may cause a buzz or rattle noise during audio unit play.

This Technical Service Bulletin provides instructions to add felt insulation and insure other door components are securely fastened.

AFFECTED VEHICLE(S)
2004-09 Galant

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Confirm the noise is coming from the area of the door trim map pocket.

^ Adjust the audio settings to maximum bass.

^ Adjust fade and balance to the suspect speaker.

^ Select music with a lot of bass.

^ While noise is heard, press against the door panel at the front and rear areas of the door pocket.

^ If the noise stops, proceed with steps to insulate the affected areas indicated in the photo.

2. Remove the affected inner door trim. Refer to the service manual for details.

NOTE:
For 2007 and later vehicles, remove the reflector lens at the rear of the door trim to remove one retaining screw.

3. Recheck for speaker noise.

^ Adjust audio settings to maximum bass.

^ Adjust fade and balance to the suspect speaker.

^ Select music with a lot of bass.

4. If speaker noise is still heard, diagnose for a defective speaker or speaker circuit.

^ Dismount the speaker and hold it in your hand while music is playing. If noise is present, replace the speaker. If speaker sound is good, firmly secure the speaker back into the mounting location and proceed to step # 5.

5. Using adhesive-backed, thin (approx. 1.0 mm) felt material (available in MMNA BSR kit p/n MB991752), cut two circles, approximately 3/4" (19mm) in diameter.

6. Release the bottom edge of the door pocket insert from the door trim panel flange (this may have already occurred while removing the door trim panel). This will allow access to underneath the map pocket corner tabs.

7. Remove the liner from the back of the felt insulator. Balance a felt pad on the end of a trim stick that has a 45° bend at the end. Affix the pad to the under side of the corner tabs of the door pocket as shown with the felt side down. It must be centered in the areas indicated in the photos to be effective. The felt will provide a cushion between the map pocket and the "+" shaped door trim panel standoffs.

8. Re-fit the bottom portion of the map pocket insert behind the door trim panel flange.

9. Check that all fasteners on the back side of the door trim panel are snug (see photo 9 above).

CAUTION
Take care not to overtighten fasteners as they are screwed into plastic bosses.

10. Ensure the wiring harness retaining clip is properly seated to the door and the vapor barrier is evenly attached along its outer edge (see photo 10 above).

11. Reinstall the door trim panel to the vehicle.

NOTE:
The beltline molding must be attached to the door trim panel prior to installation. Insure that all 7 teal colored retaining clips are undamaged and in place on the door panel. If lost or broken, replace with p/n MU000637.
