Deployment and Disposal Procedures

Before scrapping an air bag module or vehicle equipped with an air bag, the air bag must be deployed.

PRECAUTIONS
1. Vehicle should be placed outdoors with at least 20 feet of open space on all sides.
2. Remove battery from vehicle and position at least 15 feet from vehicle lefthand door.
3. Before deploying air bag, ensure no people, animals or objects are within 20 feet of vehicle.
4. Wear goggles when handling air bag modules.
5. Use care not to inhale gas produced by air bag deployment.
6. Do not handle deployed air bag for 30 minutes after deployment, due to extremely high temperatures. Never apply water to deployed air bag.
7. After disconnecting battery, wait at least 10 to 12 minutes before proceeding with disposal procedure.
8. Never disassemble an air bag. It cannot be used again.
9. Seal deployed air bag assemblies in heavy duty plastic bags, then dispose with other automotive scrap.
10. Wash hands after handling any deployed SRS components.

DEPLOYMENT TOOL INSPECTION
1. Locate fully charged 12 volt battery at least 15 feet away from vehicle.
2. Connect special deployment tool No. J38381, or equivalent, to battery and ensure green lamp marked "Deployment Tool Power On righthand side lights. If red lamp lights, reverse battery connections.
3. Connect deployment tool male and female check connectors.
4. Push tool switch to On position to ensure lefthand lamp marked "Air Bag Connector Voltage" lights. If lamp does not light, replace deployment tool.

DEPLOYING AIR BAG MODULE
INSIDE VEHICLE
When vehicle is to be scrapped, deploy air bag module(s) while still mounted in vehicle.
1. Vehicle should be placed outdoors with at least 20 feet of open space on all sides.
2. Disarm SRS as described under Air Bag Arming and Disarming.
3. Remove battery from vehicle and position at least 15 feet from vehicle lefthand door.
4. On models equipped with passenger air bag, attach special deployment tool adapters No. J38382-30.
5. Connect deployment tool connector to air bag module(s).
6. Connect deployment tool to battery. Ensure righthand lamp marked "Deployment Tool Power" lights.
7. Before deploying air bag, ensure no people, animals or objects are within 20 feet of vehicle.
8. Press deployment tool switch. Lefthand lamp marked "Air Bag Connector Voltage" will light and air bag will deploy.
9. Dispose of air bag module.

OUTSIDE VEHICLE
Activate only one air bag at a time.
1. Disarm SRS as described under Air Bag Arming and Disarming.
2. Remove air bag assembly from vehicle as described in, Air Bag.
3. Securely anchor air bag module to vise.
4. Connect special deployment tool to air bag module connector.
5. At least 15 feet from air bag assembly, connect deployment tool to battery. Ensure righthand lamp marked "Deployment Tool Power" glows green.
6. Before beginning deployment, ensure no people, animals or objects are within 20 feet of air bag.
7. Press deployment tool button. Lefthand lamp marked "Air Bag Connector Voltage" will light and module will deploy.
