PATHFINDER TRANSFER CASE WILL NOT SHIFT FROM 4WD TO 2WD MODE

APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1996 and later Pathfinder (R50)(with 4WD)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1996 or later Pathfinder transfer case will not shift from 4WD to 2WD mode, the cause may be from a variation between front and rear tire diameters. This variation can cause excessive gear loading and binding in the transfer case when the vehicle is driven on dry pavement at any speed in 4WD mode and prevent shifting back into 2WD mode. The gear shift lever can be moved into the 2WD position but the transfer system will not change to 2WD mode and the 4WD indicator light in the instrument panel will remain illuminated.

Use the following service procedure to correct this incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify that all four tires are the same brand and size.

2. Check and inflate (as required) all four tires to the specified pressure of 26 psi.

3. Road test the vehicle in 4WD High mode between 20 and 50 MPH on a flat, straight road.

A. If the 4WD indicator light on the instrument panel goes out when the gear shift lever is moved from 4WD to 2WD position, the incident is resolved.

B. If the 4WD indicator light on the instrument panel does not go out when the gear shift lever is moved from 4WD to 2WD position, exchange the front and rear tire/wheel assemblies on one side of the vehicle only (either the left or right side).

4. Road test the vehicle again to confirm the incident is resolved.

NOTE:
Uneven wear between the front and rear tires can cause this incident. To insure all four tires wear evenly, rotate the tires in accordance with the owner's manual recommendation.
