DISC BRAKE NOISE COUNTERMEASURES

APPLIED MODELS: 1985-87 Maxima

1987 Stanza 1986-87 Stanza Wagon

SERVICE INFORMATION

Some of the applied models may exhibit various types of brake noise under certain driving conditions. This Bulletin describes three different noises that are abnormal, and provides countermeasures for them.

Refer to Technical Bulletin BR87-005 (TS87-103), "Disc Brake Noise Information", for additional information about disc brake noise.

1. MAXIMA, STANZA WAGON 2WD ONLY: SQUEAKING/SQUEALING NOISE
- noise occurs with light to medium pedal force
- noise occurs during low speed stops (5-20 mph)
- more noticeable during warm, dry weather

Nissan has redesigned the front brake pads on Maxima and Stanza Wagon 2WD models to reduce this incident. The slit in the pad material has been eliminated. These pads may be installed on earlier vehicles.

In addition, Nissan has redesigned the rear brake pads on Maxima models to reduce this incident. The thickness of the metal pad backing has been changed. These pads may be installed on earlier vehicles.

2. FRONT CALIPER RATTLING NOISE
- rattle noise from the front caliper (one or both sides)

- while driving on rough roads (potholes, cobblestones, etc.)
- may disappear when brakes are applied

Countermeasure caliper pins with rubber bushings are available to quiet this rattle. They can be installed on all applied models.

3. MAXIMA ONLY: SCRAPING NOISE FROM ANY BRAKE
- noise occurs at all times, all speeds, brakes applied or not applied
- during inspection, small stones may be found in the cavity between the baffle plate and rotor.

Nissan has redesigned the baffle plates to prevent this incident. These new baffle plates may be installed on older vehicles built before the Applied VINs. The part numbers of the new baffle plates have not been changed, but the new baffle plates can be identified by their shape as shown below.
