Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Fig. 8 Cylinder Head Bolt Loosening Sequence:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain coolant, being careful not to spill coolant on drive belts.
3. Remove power steering pump drive belt, power steering pump, idler pulley and power steering brackets.
4. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
5. Remove rocker cover.
6. Set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke.

CAUTION: Be sure to follow the next step carefully. If the tensioner block is not placed properly, the chain tensioner will pop out of it's holder.

7. Install a suitable wooden or plastic chain wedge. Make sure the wedge fits all the way down the center of the timing chain. This will hold the chain and the tensioner in place for the next step.
8. Remove camshaft sprocket.
9. Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence, Fig. 8.
10. Remove cylinder head to front cover attaching bolts.
11. Remove cylinder head together with intake and exhaust manifolds.

INSTALLATION

Fig. 9 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:

Fig. 10 Adjusting Valves:

1. Install cylinder head with new gasket and tighten bolts to specification, in sequence, Fig. 9, as follows:
a. Torque all bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
b. Torque all bolts to 58 ft. lbs.
c. Loosen all bolts completely.
d. Torque all bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
e. Torque all bolts to 54-61 ft. lbs. or, if angle wrench is available, turn all bolts 90-95° clockwise.
2. Ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke.
3. Ensure front knock pin is positioned at upper surface of camshaft.
4. Set chain on camshaft sprocket by aligning each mating mark, then install camshaft sprocket on camshaft, tightening bolt to specifications. Camshaft sprocket should be installed by fitting knock pin of camshaft into its No. 2 hole. No. 2 timing mark must also be used.
5. Apply suitable sealant to sealing point of cylinder head and install rubber plug.
6. Adjust valve clearance to .012 inch as follows:
a. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC on its compression stroke and adjust valve clearance Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 Fig. 10.
b. Rotate crankshaft one turn so that No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke and adjust valve clearance Nos. 3, 5, 7 and 8.
7. Install rocker cover, power steering pump, idler pulley, power steering brackets and power steering drive belt.
8. Connect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold.
