Direct Clutch Assembly

1. Remove snap ring, backing plate, composition and steel clutch plates, apply ring snap ring, apply ring and release spring assembly, direct clutch piston and oil seals (3), Fig. 63.
2. Check direct clutch housing for wear or damage. Inspect check ball capsule for free operation or damage to ball seat. If check ball capsule replacement is necessary proceed as follows:
a. Place clutch housing on bench with clutch side down.
b. Drive out capsule using a 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) diameter drift (1986-88) or 1/4 inch (6.0 mm) diameter drift (1989-90).
c. Insert new capsule from the direct clutch side. Set the capsule in place using the drift.
3. Check direct clutch housing bushing and piston for wear, cracks or other damage.
4. Install inner and outer piston seal rings with the lips facing away from the clutch apply ring side. Install center seal on housing with lip facing upwards.
5. Lubricate seals with automatic transmission fluid and install piston into housing. Use piston installation tool, rotate piston once it is in place to seat oil seals. Be certain not to damage the oil seals on snap ring grooves during installation.
6. Check apply ring, retainer and release spring assembly for damage or collapsed springs. Install apply ring and release spring assembly, then install snap ring.

7. Check backing plate, composition and steel clutch plates for wear or damage. Lubricate plates with automatic transmission fluid and install the plates starting with a steel plate, then a composition plate, alternating until all plates are installed, Fig. 53. When installing new composition clutch plates, soak them in automatic transmission fluid for 15 minutes before installation.
8. Install backing plate, chamfered or highly polished side against composition plate, and snap ring.
