Low-Reverse Clutch

1. Check Low and Reverse backing plate for cracks or other damage, then install into the case with stepped side down, Figs. 48 and 49.
2. On 1987-90 models, install first steel waved plate.

3. On all models, check condition of clutch plates. Lubricate with automatic transmission fluid and install plates starting with a composition plate, then a steel plate alternating until all (5) composition and (5) steel plates are installed, Fig. 53. If new composition clutch plates are used, soak them in automatic transmission fluid for 15 minutes before installation.
4. On 1987-90 models, install steel waved plate (second steel waved plate.
5. On all models, install Low and Reverse clutch housing to case spacer ring. Spacer ring is .0042 inch (1.07 mm) thick.
6. Compress Low and Reverse clutch spring retainer and remove snap ring, spring retainer, waved spring and clutch piston.
7. Remove piston seals and clutch apply ring from piston. Clutch apply ring should measure .61 inch (15.42 mm) wide.
8. Check Low and Reverse clutch housing, piston and apply ring for distortion, cracks, wear or other damage.
9. Install apply ring onto piston. Install inner and outer piston seals on piston with lips facing away from apply ring side.

10. Lubricate piston seals, then using seal installer tool No. J-26744-A, install piston into clutch housing. Use tool on inner seal first, then around outer seal until piston is seated, Fig. 54.
11. Install waved spring and retainer with cupped side down.
12. Compress retainer and install snap ring.

13. Using low-reverse clutch unit remover/installer tool No. J-28542 (1986-88) or No. J-34008 (1989-90) and adapter, install Low and Reverse clutch housing with its oil feed hole aligned with oil feed hole in the case Fig. 29. If Low and Reverse clutch housing does not seat past the snap ring groove, proceed as follows:
a. Remove Tool No. J-28542 or No J-34008.

b. Install reaction sun gear, Fig. 28.
c. Rotate reaction sun gear while pushing down on clutch housing until housing drops below the snap ring groove. It may be necessary to remove the load from tool output shaft loading tool No. J-26958 to allow the housing to seat.
14. Install Low and Reverse housing to case snap ring. The snap ring is .092 inch (2.36 mm) thick.
