Removal and Replacement


The transaxle must be removed along with the engine and frame as an assembly on these models.

1. Disconnect battery cables, then drain cooling system.

2. Remove air flow tube from air cleaner and radiator core support.

3. Disconnect ECM harness electrical connector from ECM and push harness into the engine compartment Separate ECM harness from chassis fasteners and lay it on the engine assembly.

4. Disconnect engine harness electrical connector from block connector at left hood hinge, then lay the harness on engine assembly.

5. Disconnect throttle and TV cables.

6. Relieve fuel system pressure, then disconnect fuel lines.

7. Disconnect shift linkage from transaxle and transaxle oil cooler lines from radiator.

8. Remove heater and radiator hoses.

9. Discharge A/C system, then remove A/C compressor, leaving bracket attached to compressor.

10. Disconnect coupled hose from rear of A/C compressor and cap the fittings.

11. Remove upper engine strut, then raise and support vehicle.

12. Remove front wheels, then remove stabilizer bar.

13. Disconnect tie rod ends and lower ball joints from steering knuckles.

14. Remove caliper bracket assemblies and rotors.

15. Remove nuts and washers from driveshafts, then install driveshaft seal protectors No. J34754 or equivalent.

16. Using driveshaft remover tool No. J33008, extension tool No. J29794
and slide hammer tool No. J2619-01 or equivalents, separate right and left side axles from transaxle.

17. Using front hub spindle remover tool No. J28733 or equivalent, separate axle splines from hub/bearing assemblies.

18. Remove axle assemblies, then the pinch bolt from intermediate steering shaft.

19. Remove starter, flywheel access cover and torque converter bolts.

20. Disconnect exhaust pipe from rear exhaust manifold.

21. Properly support engine, then remove frame bolts. Lower frame with engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.

22. Separate transaxle from engine.

23. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Torque flywheel-to-torque converter to 35 ft lbs; park/neutral/back-up lamp switch to 22 ft lbs; starter to 32 ft lbs; transaxle engine brace-to-engine to 40 ft lbs; transaxle engine brace-to-transaxle to 37 ft lbs; transaxle front and rear mounts-to-frame to 35 ft lbs; transaxle front and rear mounts-to-transaxle to 41 ft. lbs; torque converter shield to 7 ft lbs; TV cable to case to 75 in lbs.

b. Adjust shift linkage, TV cable and Fluid level.

c. Check front suspension alignment.
