Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
Transaxle Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch:
Removal Procedure
1. Set the park brake.
2. Set the gear selector lever to Neutral (N).
3. Disconnect the Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch and the transaxle range switch electrical connectors.
4. Remove the nut securing linkage cable to transaxle manual shaft.
5. Remove the linkage cable from manual shaft.
6. Remove the two bolts securing PNP switch to transaxle.
7. Remove the PNP switch.
Installation Procedure
WARNING: After the PNP switch has been installed, verify that the engine only starts in Park and Neutral. If the engine starts in any other position, readjust the PNP switch.
1. Verify that the transaxle manual shaft is still in the Neutral position. If it has been moved, rotate the shaft clockwise from Park through Reverse into Neutral. Be careful not to damage the shaft flats, corners, or threads.
2. Install the PNP switch.
^ Align the flats in the PNP switch with the flats on the transaxle manual shaft.
^ Press the PNP switch onto the shaft and fully seat the PNP switch against the transaxle.
3. If reinstalling the original PNP switch, adjust PNP switch (refer to Transaxle Park Neutral Position (PNP) Switch/Transaxle Range Switch Adjustment procedure). New replacement PNP switches are already pinned in the Neutral position.
4. Connect the electrical connectors.
5. Install the linkage cable onto manual shaft.
6. Install the nut securing linkage cable to manual shaft.
Adjustment Procedure
1. Place the transaxle shift lever in the Neutral position.
2. Remove nut securing linkage cable to transaxle manual shaft.
3. Remove linkage cable from manual shaft.
4. Loosen the two PNP switch attaching bolts.
5. Place Park Neutral Position Switch Alignment tool J 41545 onto manual shaft so that slots on the manual shaft engage the tool.
6. Rotate the PNP switch on the manual shaft to align the adjustment slot on the switch with the leg on the tool. Tighten PNP switch attaching bolts to 28 Nm (20 lb ft).
7. Remove tool J 41545.
8. Install linkage cable to manual shaft.
9. Install nut securing linkage cable to transaxle manual shaft.
