Excessive battery movement reduces the life of a battery. The battery tray and hold down retainer are used to hold the battery securely. The battery tray should be in good condition so it will hold the battery securely and level.

A foam insulator is also used to protect the battery from engine compartment heat.

The battery tray, hold down retainer, and insulator should be clean and free from debris and corrosion before installing the battery.
