Whenever a new valve is installed or after grinding valves, it will be necessary to measure valve stem height using the Special Tool shown in Figs. 8 and 9. There should be a minimum clearance of .015 inch between gauge surface and the valve stem, Fig. 8. Check valve rotator height, Fig. 9. If valve stem tip extends less than .005 inch above rotator, replace the valve. Lacking this tool the only alternative is to lay flat feeler gauges on the retainer and check the distance between the retainer and valve stem tip.
