1. Remove intake manifold and valve cover.
2. Remove or loosen any accessory bracket or pipe that interferes with removal of cylinder head.
3. Disconnect glow plug wiring and block heater lead (if equipped).
4. Remove ground strap from right cylinder head.
5. Remove rocker arm nuts, pivots, rocker arms and push rods. Scribe mark on pivots and separate so they may be easily identified and replaced in their original location.
6. Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe from exhaust manifold on side being removed and loosen it on opposite side.
7. Remove pipe plugs covering upper cylinder head bolts, Fig. 15.
8. Remove engine block drain plug, from side that is to be worked on.
9. Remove cylinder head bolts and cylinder head. If necessary to remove pre-chamber, remove glow plug and nozzle, then tap out with a small blunt 1/8 inch drift. Do not use tapered drift.
10. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Fig. 16 for correct torque sequence. Torque cylinder head bolts except bolts 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to 100 ft. lbs. Torque bolts 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to 41 ft. lbs. After original torquing, retorque bolts mentioned above to 142 and 59 ft.lbs respectively. The head gaskets used on this engine are composition type, and not to be used with a sealer of any kind. Any sealer applied may result in head gasket leakage.
