A/T - THM 350/350C Starts In Second Gear After Rebuild
TSB 87-22 (Apr)SUBJECT: 350/350 C
PROBLEM: Second Gear Starts, or Bind-up in Manual Low
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
The six cylinder intermediate clutch piston uses only two friction clutch plates. If three friction clutch plates are used with the six cylinder intermediate clutch piston, you will have the above problem.
Chart # 1 provides a height comparison of the clutch pistons for six and eight cylinder models, with the clutch pistons installed in the clutch drum, or case.
If you have a vehicle with this problem after overhaul, remove pan and check clearance at the intermediate clutch.
If no clearance exists between the intermediate clutch plates, this indicates that the plates have been mechanically applied with the installation of the pump.
This is possibly caused by the wrong intermediate clutch piston.
Illustration # 7, in Figure 2, identifies the place to check the intermediate clutch on a 350 C (valve body removed) for clearance.
This can be done with a small screw driver
This will allow you to see if this bulletin applies to your transmission, before removal of the unit.
