Compressor Does Not Operate
Exc. Toronado, 1984-85 Cutlass Ciera & 1985 98
1. Check A/C fuse. If fuse is blown, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, check brown wire between height sensor and fuse block and fuse block to ELC relay for shorts. If wire is satisfactory, check other systems on the same fuse. If fuse is not blown, proceed to step 2.
2. With ignition ``On'' and engine ``Off,'' connect a suitable jumper wire from compressor relay yellow wire terminal to ground. If compressor does not operate, use a suitable 12 volt test light and check for voltage at compressor relay brown wire terminal. If voltage exists, proceed to step 3. If voltage does not exist, locate and repair open in brown wire between fuse block and ELC relay and retest system. If compressor does operate, proceed as follows:
a. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
b. Inspect electrical connector at height sensor. Ensure connector key is properly installed in sensor keyway slot.
c. Using a suitable ohmmeter, check harness connector terminal 4 (black wire) for proper ground circuit. Repair any opens found.
d. Disconnect height sensor connector from height sensor then, using a suitable test light, check for 12 volts at terminal 5 of connector (brown wire). If no power exists, check for opens in brown wire from connector to fusible link and from fusible link to generator. If fusible link is blown, refer to ``Compressor Current Draw, Pressure Output & Leak Down Test.''
e. Remove jumper wire from compressor relay if not previously removed then, check for 12 volts at terminal 3 of connector (yellow wire). If no power exists, check for opens in yellow wire from connector to compressor relay and repair as necessary.
f. Check for 12 volts at terminal 6 of connector (red wire). If no power exists, check for opens in red wire from connector to A/C fuse.
g. Check for proper height sensor, link and adjustment.
h. Check or replace height sensor. Refer to ``Height Sensor Operational Test.''
3. Using a suitable test light, probe green wire at compressor and red wire at compressor relay for 12 volts. If power exists at both terminals, check compressor ground. If ground is satisfactory, check compressor performance, refer to ``Compressor Current Draw, Pressure Output & Leak Down Test.'' If power exists at the red wire terminal only, check for opens in green wire from compressor to relay. If power does not exist at either terminal, check for opens in red wire from compressor to relay. If circuits are satisfactory, replace relay. During above procedure, if testing time requires more than 3 1/2 minutes to complete, cycle ignition ``Off'' and back ``On'' to reset compressor run time.
