Rear Wheel Drive Transmission

REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE TRANSMISSION, R & R

REMOVAL

1. Open hood and place protectors on both fenders.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly.


Downshift and T.V. Cable:




3. Disconnect downshift or T.V. cable at its upper end.
4. Remove transmission oil fluid level indicator (and bolt holding fluid level indicator tube if accessable.)
5. Raise car.
6. Remove propeller shaft.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable at the transmission.
8. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission.
9. Disconnect all electrical leads at the transmission and any clips that retain the leads to the transmission case.
10. Remove flywheel cover and mark flywheel and torque converter to maintain original balance.
11. Remove torque converter to flywheel bolts and/or nuts.
12. Disconnect the catalytic converter support bracket.
13. Remove the floor pan reinforcement (if used) if it interferes with propeller shaft removal or installation.
14. Remove transmission support to transmission mount bolt and transmission support to frame bolts (and insulators if used).
15. Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise the transmission slightly.
16. Slide the transmission support rearward.
17. Lower the transmission to gain access to the oil cooler lines and Downshift or T.V. cable attachments.

18. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and Downshift or T.V. cable. Cap all openings.

19. Support engine with a suitable tool and remove the transmission to engine bolts.
20. Disconnect the transmission assembly being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage.
21. Install torque converter holding Tool J-21366 and remove the transmission assembly from the car.

INSTALLATION
To install, reverse the removal procedure and include the following:
^ Before installing the flex plate to converter bolts, make certain that the weld nuts on the converter are flush with the flex plate and the converter rotates freely by hand in this position. Hand start the three bolts and tighten finger tight, then torque to specifications. This will insure proper converter alignment. Install new oil seal on oil filler tube before installing tube.
^ Torque all fasteners to specifications.

^ Adjust shift linkage.
^ Adjust Downshift or T.V. Cable.
^ Refill transmission with fluid.
