A/T - THM 350/350C Rattling Noise

TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 173

TRANSMISSION: 350/350-C

SUBJECT: RATTLE NOISE

APPLICATION: GM

350/350-C
RATTLE NOISE

A complaint of a rattling noise on a 350/350-C may be caused by the intermediate steels bouncing against the lugs of the case as the frictions rotate. The noise will stop when the unit shifts to seconds gear. When listening with a stethoscope, the noise will be loudest just behind the bellhousing.

An effective cure for this is to cotter pin the steels together, as outlined below.

Step 1.

Clamp the steels together and drill 3 evenly spaced. 096" holes through the lugs of the steels.

Step 2.

Assembly the clutch pack on the bench, and install a 3/32 cotter pin through each hole, with the round end up.

Stainless steel cotter pins are best for this application. They are easily available at marine supply stores.

Step 3.

Bend the ends of the cotter pins flat and cut them off short. The cotter pins must be installed with the round end towards the pump, and the bent end towards the pressure plate.
