Low & Reverse Clutch Assembly









1. Check Lo and reverse clutch composition-faced, steel plates and wave plate for wear or burring.

2. Compress Lo and reverse clutch spring retainer and remove snap ring, retainer, wave spring, Lo and reverse clutch piston, outer and inner piston seals and clutch apply ring. Check components for wear or damage and replace any worn or damaged component Refer to Figure for clutch plate usage chart.

3. Install clutch apply ring onto Lo and reverse clutch piston.

4. Install outer and inner seals onto piston with seal lips facing away from clutch apply ring.

5. Install seal protector tool No. J25011 or equivalent onto Lo and reverse clutch housing.

6. Lubricate clutch seals and using a suitable tool, install Lo and reverse clutch piston into clutch housing.

7. Remove seal protector tool and install waved release spring, retainer with cupped face down and snap ring.

8. Lubricate and install Lo and reverse clutch plates into transmission case starting with a flat steel plate and alternating to a composition-faced plate.

9. Installed waved steel plate on top of the last flat steel plate installed.

10. Install Lo and reverse clutch housing spacer ring into transmission case.

11. Install Lo and reverse clutch housing assembly into transmission case. Using tool No. J28542 or equivalent, align reverse clutch housing feed hole with reverse case feed passage. If Lo and reverse clutch housing does not seat completely past transmission case snap ring groove, proceed as follows:

a. Remove tool No. J28542. Install input drum and rear sun gear into transmission case.

b. Rotate rear sun gear back and forth, lightly tapping rear sun gear with input drum to align roller clutch race and Lo and reverse clutch hub splines.

c. Install Lo and reverse clutch housing snap ring onto transmission case with flat side against clutch housing. Position snap gap opposite of parking pawl rod.

12. Install cup plug and seal assembly into transmission case. Using a hammer and a 3/8 inch (10 mm) diameter metal rod, drive cup plug and seal assembly until it completely seats against Lo and reverse clutch housing.
