125C Automatic Transaxle

1. Place forward clutch input shaft through hole in workbench.





2. Remove clutch pack snap ring, see images.

3. Remove backing plate, composition plates and steel plates.

4. Using tools J-25018-A, J-23327 and J-23456, or equivalents, compress spring pack, then remove snap ring.

5. Remove tools J-25018-A and J23327.

6. Remove retainer and spring assembly.

7. Remove forward clutch piston and insert.

8. Remove inner and outer piston seals and check for nicks.

9. Check forward clutch housing for cracks or broken welds.

10. Check input shaft splines and journals for damage.

11. Check input shaft sleeve for damage, ensuring that sleeve does not turn and that slot in sleeve is aligned with hole in input shaft.





12. Check input shaft Teflon seal rings for damage. If new seal rings are installed, ensure that cut ends are installed in the same way they are cut, see image.

13. Check forward clutch piston and apply ring for damage or cracks.

14. Install inner and outer seals on piston with lips facing forward clutch housing. Install forward clutch piston past large forward clutch snap ring groove carefully to avoid cuffing seal in groove. Oil seal to facilitate installation.

15. Inspect and install forward clutch insert.

16. Install piston using tool around inner seal, then the outer seal.

17. Inspect and install spring guide.

18. Check forward clutch spring and retainer assembly for collapsed springs or bent retainer.





19. Install retainer and spring assembly, see image.

20. Using tools J-25018-A and J-23456, or equivalents, compress retainer spring assembly past snap ring groove.

21. Install snap ring, then remove tools.

22. Check selective backing plate for damage or cracks.

23. Check composition and steel plates for wear or burning, then lubricate composition plates.





24. Install clutch plates, starting with waved steel plate, alternating composition and flat steel plates until proper number of plates are installed, see image.

25. Install backing plate with stamped identification side up.





26. Install forward clutch backing plate snap ring, then measure endplay as shown in image. If endplay is not between .040-.060 inch, refer to image for correct backing plate selection.
