Steering Wheel: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. For tilt and telescope steering column proceed as follows:
a. Remove pad assembly retaining screws, disconnect connector and remove pad assembly.
b. Move locking lever counterclockwise until full release is obtained. Scribe a mark on the plate assembly where the two screws attach plate assembly to locking lever (for ease of installation) and remove the two screws.
c. Unscrew and remove plate assembly.
3. For standard wheel, pull up on horn cap retainer assembly and disconnect horn contacts.
4. For deluxe wheel, remove three screws from pad assembly and disconnect connectors.
5. On sport wheel, pull up on and remove emblem and horn contact assembly from wheel.
6. On wood grain wheel, carefully pry horn cap assembly from wheel.
7. On all models, remove steering wheel nut and using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel. Some vehicles have a snap ring on the end of the steering shaft which must be removed before removing steering wheel nut.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
