Parking Brake System: Adjustments

EXC. MODELS W/REAR WHEEL DISC BRAKES
Depress parking brake pedal 2 clicks on 1982---86 models, or 3 clicks on 1987 models. Tighten adjusting nut until left rear wheel on 1982---86 models, or right rear wheel on 1987 models can just be rotated rearward using both hands and cannot be rotated forward. Release parking brake and ensure rear wheels turn freely in either direction with no brake drag.
MODELS W/REAR WHEEL DISC BRAKES
1. Lubricate parking brake cables at underbody contact points and equalizer hooks.
2. Raise and support rear of vehicle with parking brakes fully released.
3. Prevent cable stud from turning and tighten equalizer nut until cable slack is removed. Ensure caliper levers are against stops on caliper housing after tightening equalizer nut, otherwise, loosen cable until levers return to stops.
4. Operate parking brake several times to check adjustment. Pedal should travel 4---5 1/2 inches with approximately 120 lbs. force applied to pedal.
5. Lower vehicle and ensure levers remain on caliper stops. If not, back off parking brake adjuster as necessary.
