Reaction Unit Parts

1. Measure for correct input drum to reaction sun gear selective snap ring as follows:

a. Install tool J-26958 as shown in Fig. 13. Tool must be in loaded position.

b. Install feeler gauge tool No. J-28588 using two case cover bolts, Fig. 26. Locate extension between the open ends of the selective snap ring.
c. Press reaction sun gear down to make certain it is seated.
d. Install dial indicator and post, as shown in Fig. 26.
e. Position feeler gauge under extension shoulder and set dial indicator to zero.
f. Rotate the selective snap ring under the extension and swing the feeler gauge away from the extension. Note amount of dial indicator movement making sure the reading is +.33 to - .13 mm (+.013 to - .005 inch) from the O reference point. Selective snap ring controlling this endplay is located on the reaction sun gear shaft. If endplay is out of specifications, select proper thickness snap ring from reaction sun gear to input drum selective snap ring chart. Measure snap ring for proper identification.

2. To measure Low and Reverse clutch housing to Low roller clutch race endplay proceed as follows:
a. Leave dial indicator in place and zero dial indicator. Leave J-26958 in the loaded position.

b. Insert a screwdriver through parking pawl case opening next to parking pawl and lift reaction internal gear to check Low and Reverse clutch endplay, Fig. 27.
c. Endplay should be .003-.046 inch (.08-1.17 mm). If required, select the correct washer from the "Reverse Clutch Housing To Low Race Selective Thrust Washer Chart". Selective thrust washer is located between Low and Reverse clutch housing and Low roller clutch assembly.

d. Remove dial indicator and supports from case.

3. Remove reaction sun gear, then low-reverse clutch housing to case snap ring, Fig. 28. Snap ring is .092 inch (2.36 mm) thick.

4. Using low-reverse clutch unit remover/installer tool No. J-28542 (1986-88) or No. J-34008 (1989-90) and adapter, pull out low-reverse clutch housing, Fig. 29.
5. Remove the low-reverse housing to case spacer ring. The ring is .042 inch (1.07 mm) thick.

6. Grasp final drive sun gear shaft and pull out reaction gear set, Fig. 30.

7. Remove roller clutch and reaction carrier assembly off final drive sun gear shaft. Remove 4 tanged reaction carrier to reaction internal gear thrust washer, Fig. 31.
8. Remove low-reverse clutch plates off final drive sun gear shaft.
9. Remove reaction internal gear to reaction sun gear thrust bearing assembly off reaction gear, then pull reaction internal gear from final drive sun gear shaft.
