Shim Selection

1. Place transaxle case onto holding fixture J-28408.

2. With bearing races installed in case install input shaft, output shaft and differential into transaxle case. Place bearing races onto their respective bearings.

3. Position gauge No. J-26935-2 on input shaft bearing, gauge No. J-26935-4 on output shaft bearing and gauge No. J-26935-3 on differential bearing. Ensure that bearing races fit smoothly into bores of gauge tools. Install oil shield retainer into bore of gauge J-26935-4 on output shaft.

4. Carefully assemble clutch cover over gauges and onto transaxle case, using seven spacers placed evenly around perimeter of case.

5. Draw cover to case by alternately and evenly tightening bolts provided. Torque bolts to 10 ft lbs to compress gauge sleeves.

6. Rotate each gauge to seat bearings. Rotate the differential case three revolutions in each direction to seat bearings.

7. With gauges compressed, check gap between outer sleeve and base pad. The largest shim that can be placed into the gap and drawn through without binding is the correct shim for reassembly.

8. After each of the three shims has been selected, remove clutch cover, seven spacers and gauges.

9. Place selected shims into bore on clutch cover and add metal shield, then install bearing cups using tool No. J-26936 for input shaft bearing cup, tool No. J-23423-A for output shaft bearing cup and tool No. J-26938 for differential side bearing cup.
