Body - Sheet Metal Corrosion

DATE: SUBJECT INFORMATION BULLETIN NO.

January 7, 1983 SHEET METAL CORROSION CAUSED BY INSTALLATION
OF "ADD-ON" EQUIPMENT 83-I-14

Whenever items such as body side moldings, vinyl tops, dealer name plates, mud/splash guards, etc., are added to a vehicle after manufacture which require piercing of sheet metal panels, a possibility exists for sheet metal corrosion to occur in areas where the metal has been pierced, as well as other areas caused by water entry at the point of piercing.

The Oldsmobile Perforation From Corrosion Limited Warranty does not cover corrosion due to "vehicle alteration"; therefore, the reliability and performance of non-GM "add-on" equipment installations must become the responsibility of the installer (dealer or vehicle owner). For this reason, you should evaluate the procedures used in your dealership (and outside sublet shops) to assure that proper steps are being taken to provide sheet metal corrosion protection which could be affected by the installation of such "add-on" equipment.

TO ALL OLDSMOBILE DEALERS:

To ensure that all dealers are aware of the importance of providing corrosion protection to areas of vehicles where add-on equipment (requiring sheet metal piercing) has been installed, the attached Dealer Management Bulletin is being provided.

Some non-GM add-on equipment installations could lead to corrosion in areas where sheet metal has been pierced, due to insufficient installation instructions and/or the use of fasteners which do not have self-sealing design. Installations of this type could affect coverage under the Oldsmobile Perforation From Corrosion Limited Warranty.

We encourage you to review the details of this bulletin with your Sales and Service Management as well as any outside suppliers you may have.
