Assemble

1. Turn transmission to horizontal position with oil pan side up.

2. If removed, install manual shaft seal with lip facing inward toward transmission case. Use a 9/16 inch (13 mm) socket to seat seal.





3. Install parking pawl and return spring with tooth toward inside of case and return spring under pawl tooth with spring ends toward inside of case located against case pad, see image.

4. Align parking pawl and return spring with case shaft bore, then install parking pawl shaft with tapered end first

5. Using a 3/8 inch (10 mm) rod, install parking pawl shaft cup plug with open end out past retaining pin hole.

6. Install parking pawl retaining pin, then while holding parking pawl toward center of transmission, install park bracket. Torque bolts to 15-20 ft lbs (20-27 Nm).

7. Install park actuator rod into inside detent lever on pin side, with locating lever between actuator rod tangs.





8. Install park actuator rod and inside detent lever on pin toward center of transmission and actuator plunger between parking pawl and park bracket, see image. File any burrs or raised edges off manual shaft which may damage seal during shaft installation.





9. Install manual shaft with small identification ring groove first, through case, then install manual shaft to case retaining pin, indexing it with larger groove on manual shaft, see image.

10. Install detent lever on shaft, then install nut and torque to 20-25 ft lbs (27-34 Nm).

11. If necessary to replace nylon speedometer gear, proceed as follows:

a. Depress speedometer gear clip, then remove gear and clip by tapping gear lightly with a plastic hammer. Make sure to install speedometer drive gear so that driven gear will mesh with it.





b. Place speedometer drive clip with tanged end in correct hole of output shaft, see image, then align slot of speedometer drive gear with clip and install gear. If necessary to replace steel speedometer gear, refer to step 6 under "Subassembly Service."

12. If damaged, replace rear internal gear to output shaft snap ring.





13. Install rear internal gear to sun gear roller thrust bearing assembly by placing small diameter race over output shaft, see image.





14. Inspect roller clutch and rear carrier assembly for damage, see image.





15. Install tool J-25013-1 with open end first into case, then bolt tool J-25013-5 onto end of case, see image.

16. With transmission case in vertical position, install rear unit components into case and into tool J-25013-1 sleeve, indexing parking pawl lugs to pass by parking pawl tooth.

17. Using tool J-25013-5 adjusting screw and viewing through parking pawl case slot, adjust height of rear internal gear parking pawl lugs to align flush with parking pawl tooth. Make sure speedometer drive gear is visible through speedometer gear bore. If gear is not visible, it may be located on wrong journal of shaft.





18. Install low and reverse clutch housing to case spacer ring in case, see image.

19. Using tool J-25012, install low and reverse clutch housing assembly aligning reverse clutch housing feed hole with reverse clutch feed passage. If low and reverse clutch housing does not seat past case snap ring groove, proceed as follows:

a. Remove tool J-25012, then using rear sun gear and input drum as a tool, install input drum and rear sun gear in case.





b. Rotate rear sun gear back and forth, tapping lightly with input drum to align roller race and low and reverse clutch hub splines, see image.

c. Remove input drum and rear sun gear. It may be necessary to loosen adjusting screw on J-25013-5 to install snap ring.

d. Repeat steps a, b, and c if low and reverse clutch housing is not fully seated past case snap ring groove.

20. Install low and reverse clutch housing to case snap ring with flat side against housing (beveled side up). Position snap ring gap on opposite side of parking pawl rod.

21. Install rear sun gear into input drum with spline side first, then retain with snap ring.





22. Install 4 tanged thrust washer on input drum over sun gear end. Align tangs into input drum and retain with petrolatum, see image.

23. Install rear sun ear and input drum assembly, see image above step 19b.





24. Install front sun gear with identification mark (drill spot or groove) against input drum to rear sun gear snap ring, see image.





25. Install sun gear to front carrier thrust bearing race assembly with roller thrust bearing against front sun gear, see image. This thrust bearing requires only one thrust race.





26. Install front carrier and thrust bearing assembly, see image.

27. Install front internal gear and thrust washer.

28. Install rear selective thrust washer with identification number toward front of transmission.

29. Install snap ring on output shaft making sure it is fully seated in output shaft groove.





30. Install output shaft to turbine shaft front selective thrust washer in output shaft and retain with petrolatum, see image.








31. Install intermediate band, locating band ply lug and anchor pin in case slots, see images.








32. Install direct and forward clutch assemblies and rotate into place, see first image. When properly installed, the direct clutch housing will be about 15/16 inches (33-34 mm) from pump face in case, see second image.

33. Install 2 oil pump to transmission case alignment pins in case. Before installing pump, make sure intermediate band anchor pin plug is aligned with band anchor pin hole in case.

34. Install oil pump assembly. Install all except one retaining bolt and finger tighten. If turbine shaft cannot be rotated as oil pump is being drawn into place, the forward or direct clutch housings have not been properly installed to index with all the clutch plates. This condition must be corrected before pump is pulled into place.

35. Replace alignment pins with two bolts and torque pump to case bolts to 15-20 ft lbs (20-27 Nm). Make sure turbine shaft rotates freely.

36. Check front unit endplay as described under "Transmission Disassembly."

37. Install remaining oil pump to case bolt and torque to 15-20 ft lbs (20-27 Nm).

38. Remove tools and turn transmission to a horizontal position with oil pan side up.

39. Install governor assembly with seal ring end first into cover.

CAUTION: Do not use hammer to install governor assembly into case, as damage to case or governor could result.

40. Install governor and cover assembly, aligning governor shaft with hole in case.

41. Rotate governor and cover assembly and output shaft slightly. The cover fits tight in the bore the last 1/16 inch (1.5 mm).

42. Install governor retaining ring, aligning ring gap with end showing in case slot. Governor shaft is not aligned with case hole, if retaining ring cannot be installed.

43. Install intermediate servo piston into cover, then install intermediate servo assembly into case. Tap lightly with rubber hammer if necessary. Ensure tapered end of band apply pin is properly located against band apply lug.

44. Install retaining ring, aligning ring gap with end showing in case. Before installing control valve body assembly, inspect all springs, control valve body assembly, spacer plate, throttle lever and bracket assembly for damage.

45. Install 1-2 accumulator spring into case. Do not interchange check balls. The size of the check balls used in the control valve body are .250 inch (6.35 mm), while the size of the check ball in the oil pump assembly is .281 inch (7.14 mm).





46. Install 5th check ball into case, see image.





47. Install two guide pins into case, see image.





48. Install the remaining 4 check balls into valve body and retain with petrolatum, see image.

49. Place valve body to spacer plate gasket marked "VB" on valve body.

50. Place spacer plate over "VB" gasket, then position spacer plate to case gasket "C" onto spacer plate.

51. Insert 2 valve body to case retaining screws through valve body, gaskets and spacer plate, then install these parts, aligning manual valve with detent lever pin, see image above step 47. Make sure check balls, 1-2 accumulator piston and manual valve do not fall out.

52. Install but do not tighten all valve body retaining bolts except throttle lever bracket assembly and oil screen bolts. The oil screen bolts are about 3/8 inch (10 mm) longer than the valve body bolts an are not interchangeable.

53. Remove guide pins and install inside detent roller and spring assembly, locating tang in valve body and roller on inside detent lever. Install retaining bolts.





54. If removed, install spring on top of lifter, and then lifter spring first into throttle bracket, see image.





55. Install link on lever making sure it is hooked as shown in image.

56. Install throttle lever and bracket assembly, locating slot in bracket with pin and aligning lifter through valve body hole with link through T.V. linkage case bore. Install bolt.

57. Torque valve body bolts to 12 ft lbs (17 Nm).





58. Using 11/16 oil sending unit socket or equivalent, install governor pressure switch see image, and torque to 5-10 ft lbs (7-14 Nm), then connect long solenoid lead wire to governor pressure switch terminal, if applicable.

59. Install oil screen and gasket and torque retaining bolts to 9-12 ft lbs (13-17 Nm).

60. Install speedometer gear into housing and install assembly into transmission case.

61. Install retainer and bolt, aligning slot in gear housing with retainer. Torque bolt to 6-10 ft lbs (8-14 Nm).
