Starter Motor: Service and Repair
Upon removal of starter, note if any shims are used. If shims are used, they should be reinstalled in their original location during installation.
If starter is noisy during cranking, remove one .015 inch double shim or add one .015 inch single shim to the outer bolt. If starter makes a high pitched whine after firing, add .015 inch double shims until noise ceases.
EXC. TORONADO, V6-231 & 252 & V8-260 DIESEL W/MANUAL TRANS.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Proceed as follows:
a. Remove upper support retaining bolts.
b. On V8 engines, remove flywheel housing cover.
3. Remove starter retaining bolts, then lower starter, disconnect electrical leads and remove starter.
4. Reverse procedure to install.
TORONADO
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove starter attaching bolts and position starter so that starter wiring can be disconnected.
3. Disconnect starter wiring, then lower starter from vehicle.
4. Reverse procedure to install. If shims were removed, they must be installed in their original location.
