CONDITION
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing has shown that some 1985 Oldsmobile Calais, Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser and Ninety-Eight models equipped with RPO LN7 3.0L engine (VIN Code L) or RPO LN3 3.8L engine (VIN Code 3) and Federal Emissions may be emitting pollutants in excess of the Federal Emission Standards. This condition could cause a vehicle to fail an emission inspection test, if required under state or local law.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 1985 Calais, Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser and Ninety-Eight model vehicles with 3.0L or 3.8L V6 multiport fuel injection engines and Federal Emissions (RPO NA5), from start-of-production through end-ofproduction, as listed below:
NOTICE: California Emissions (RPO VJ9 or NB2) are not involved.
Other V6 engines are not involved.
All vehicles listed on the dealer printout will require correction. Should a question arise concerning the involvement of a specific vehicle(s) in this campaign, option codes may be read from the Service Parts Identification Label; or the reference code & label part number can be read from the Vehicle Emission Control Information label underhood. Also, dealers should access the Vehicle Information Service System (V.I.S.S.) for verification.
DEALER ACTION
Dealers are to replace the PROM assembly in the Electronic Control Module (ECM) on vehicles Involved, per the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin.
If there is evidence of intentional disablement of the emission system, the dealer is to notify the vehicle owner of this condition and ask if he/she wants the system restored. Restoration cost is the responsibility of the owner.
Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your used vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.
