Effective with the 1987 model year, the GM Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) format will be modified for Oldsmobile carlines.. The changes will be made to VIN position numbers 6 and 7 which displayed the passenger car body style in 1986. Example: 1986 VIN 1G3CW 69 36G4300001.

Commencing with 1987 start of production, a one (1) position numeric code in the 6th position will identify body style as defined below:

1 Two door coupe/sedan 11, 27, 37, 47, 57
2 Two door hatch back 77
5 Four door sedan 19,69
8 Four door station wagon 35

The 7th position of the passenger car VIN will define the restraint system. For 1987 the following are applicable:

1 Manual belts
4 Automatic belts (passive restraints)

Refer to Figure 1.
This change will be made since additional restraint systems will be introduced beginning with the 1987 model year.
