Letters Information
Dear Oldsmobile Owner:General Motors has determined that certain 1987 Ninety-Eight, Delta 88, Cutlass Ciera and Calais models equipped with 3.0L or 3.8L fuel injected engines may be equipped with a mass air flow sensor containing cracked sensor foils. The mass air flow sensor which is part of the engine's fuel and emission system may fail, resulting in poor driveability, and may affect exhaust emissions.
To correct this condition, your dealer will inspect and replace, if required, the mass air flow sensor on your vehicle. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
Instructions for performing this service have been sent to your Oldsmobile dealer. The labor time necessary to perform this modification is approximately 10 minutes. Please allow additional time for the dealer to process your vehicle. Please contact your dealer to arrange a mutually satisfactory service date.
The enclosed Owner Reply Card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist him in making the repair to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded the vehicle bearing the vehicle identification number on this card, please let us know by completing the postage paid Owner Reply Card and returning it to us so that we may update our records. Should your dealer not schedule a service date within a reasonable time, we recommend you contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office either in person or by telephone. The Zone Office will assist you and the dealer in getting your vehicle corrected. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone Offices are listed in your Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet which is located in your instrument panel compartment.
We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action to assure that your vehicle meets applicable government emission requirements and in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products. We urge your prompt cooperation in this matter.
TO ALL OLDSMOBILE DEALERS:
Oldsmobile Division is releasing Campaign 87-E-01 involving certain 1987 Ninety-Eight, Delta 88, Cutlass Ciera, and Calais models equipped with 3.0L or 3.8L fuel injected engines. These vehicles were assembled with a mass air flow (MAF) sensor that may contain cracked sensor foils. It is possible that this MAF sensor could cause the vehicle's "Service Engine Soon" light to turn on (Trouble Code 34) and the emission system to operate in the backup mode. Also, the engine may intermittently not stay running at the closed throttle position with no "Service Engine Soon" light indication.
To correct this condition on vehicles involved, dealers are to inspect and, if required, replace the MAF sensor as instructed in the Service Procedure Section of Emission Campaign Bulletin 87-E-01.
Oldsmobile Division will issue billing invoices to dealers on vehicles involved when the campaign is completed. Dealers on DCS should transmit campaign claims on the day they are completed. Dealers not on DCS should contact their zone office daily and provide the VIN, repair order number, and repair order date to zone service personnel on vehicles completed. Dealers not on DCS should also submit a campaign claim via the 725 OLDS in the normal manner to obtain credit for the campaign completion. Following this procedure will ensure that billing invoices will be issued with the shortest possible delay.
If your dealership has vehicles involved in this campaign, you will receive the following: one printout of vehicles in VIN sequence and one printout of vehicles in alphabetical sequence by owner name.
These printouts contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number and owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data will enable dealers to follow up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the followup necessary to complete this campaign.
Enclosed with this letter are:
One Emission Campaign Bulletin 87-E-01 Copy of Owner Letter
Dealers with vehicles to correct will also receive:
One Printout of Vehicles in VIN Sequence One Printout of Vehicles in Alphabetical Sequence One mass air flow sensor for each vehicle listed on the printout (to be shipped under separate cover).
Your cooperation in completing this campaign as soon as possible will be greatly appreciated.
