DESCRIPTION
The 440-T4 transaxle is a fully automatic unit which provides four forward speeds including an overdrive top gear. The transmission unit includes a three element hydraulic torque converter and lockup clutching element, tour multiple disc clutch packs, roller clutch, sprag clutch, two bands and a compound reaction planetary gear set. Power is transmitted to the drive wheels from the planetary gear through a final drive gear set and differential assembly.
The converter is designed to provide torque multiplication during acceleration and at slow vehicle speed, and lockup during normal operation for increase operating economy. Operation of the converter lockup clutch is controlled automatically by the engine fuel system electronic control module. In addition, the converter drives the vane type oil pump by means of a shaft splined to the converter cover. The torque converter hydraulically couples the engine to the planetary gears through a turbine and shaft assembly which drives the transmission output shaft by means of a drive link chain and sprockets.
The final drive assembly is a planetary gear set consisting of a final drive internal gear which is splined to the transaxle case, a final drive sun gear which is splined to the final drive sun gear shaft, and the final drive planet pinions which are located in the differential and final drive carrier assembly.
The gear set operates in reduction at all times. Power through the final drive sun gear shaft drives the sun gear in a clockwise direction, which drives the planet pinions in a counterclockwise direction. Since the final drive internal gear is splined to the case and will not rotate, the differential and final drive carrier will rotate in a clockwise direction.
