Manual Low
With the selector lever in low (1) position, the input clutch, 1-2
band and third clutch are applied, and both the sprag and third roller clutches will be holding. Power flow in this position is the same as for the drive range first gear, except for the application of the third clutch which provides engine braking deceleration. Coasting in drive range first gear (third clutch off) allows the vehicle motion to drive the input
sun gear faster than the engine is driving the input housing due to the overrunning of the sprag. However, with the third clutch applied and the third roller clutch holding, the input sun gear is prevented from rotating faster than the input housing, and vehicle motion is braked by the force of the engine driving the housing through the input clutch and drive link.
