Early Fuel Evaporation ( EFE ): Service and Repair
EFE VALVE REPLACEMENT
1. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect vacuum line from EFE valve.
2. Remove exhaust pipe to manifold nuts, washers and tension springs, if used.
3. Lower exhaust crossover pipe and remove EFE valve.
4. Reverse procedure to install using new seals and gaskets.
EFE THERMAL VACUUM SWITCH REPLACEMENT
1. Drain coolant level below outlet housing, then disconnect vacuum hoses from switch.
2. Noting position of ports, remove switch from outlet housing.
3. Apply soft setting sealant to threads of replacement TVS and install into outlet housing. No sealant should be applied to sensor end of TVS, since improper operation may result.
4. Torque switch to 120 inch lbs. and continue turning clockwise until ports align with vacuum hoses.
5. Connect vacuum hoses to switch, then add coolant as necessary.
6. Start engine and check for leaks.
EFE SOLENOID REPLACEMENT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect electrical leads and vacuum hoses from solenoid, then remove solenoid to valve cover bracket retaining screw and the solenoid.
3. Reverse procedure to install.
CERAMIC HEATER GRID REPLACEMENT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect all electrical, vacuum and fuel connections from carburetor.
3. Disconnect heater electrical connector, then remove carburetor and heater assembly.
4. Reverse procedure to install, then start engine and check for leaks.
HEATER RELAY REPLACEMENT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and relay electrical connections.
2. Remove relay retaining bolts, then the relay.
3. Reverse procedure to install.
