Pushrod Engine

Typical block assembly & components:

1. Disconnect battery and drain cooling system.
2. Remove air cleaner.
3. Disconnect accelerator and, if so equipped, TV cables.
4. Disconnect ECM wiring on engine.
5. Disconnect any vacuum hoses interfering with engine removal.
6. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses at engine.
7. Remove exhaust heat shield, if equipped.
8. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove adjustment bolt at engine mount.
9. On all vehicles, disconnect engine wiring harness at firewall.
10. Remove windshield washer reservoir.
11. Remove alternator drive belt.
12. Remove power steering belt.
13. Disconnect fuel lines.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove A/C brace.
16. On all vehicles, remove inner fender splash shield.
17. On vehicles equipped with A/C, remove A/C compressor.
18. Remove flywheel splash shield and disconnect starter wiring.
19. Disconnect front starter brace and remove starter.
20. On vehicles with automatic transaxles, remove torque converter bolts.
21. Remove crankshaft pulley using tool J-24420 or equivalent.
22. Remove oil filter.
23. Disconnect engine to transmission bracket and right rear engine mount.
24. Disconnect exhaust at manifold and center hanger. Loosen muffler hanger.
25. On vehicles with automatic transaxles, disconnect TV and shift cable bracket.
26. Remove 2 lower bellhousing bolts.
27. Lower vehicle.
28. Remove right front engine mount nuts.
29. Remove alternator and adjusting bracket.
30. Disconnect master cylinder and position aside.
31. Attach suitable lifting device to engine.
32. Remove right front engine mount bracket.
33. Remove upper bellhousing bolts.

34. Lift engine and remove power steering pump, if so equipped.
35. Remove engine.
36. Install engine mount alignment bolt M6.0 x 1 x 65, Fig. 1, to ensure proper power train alignment.
37. Lower engine into vehicle.
38. Install upper bellhousing bolts and left front engine mount nuts.
39. Reverse removal procedure to install. On 1982---83 models, once engine is installed, check alignment bolt. If excessive effort is required to remove bolt, loosen transaxle mount adjusting bolts and realign power train.
