4 SPD Manual Transaxle Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Install engine support fixture so that one end is supported on cowl tray over the wiper motor and the other end rests on the radiator support. Connect fixture hook to engine lift ring and raise engine to relieve weight from engine mounts, see accompanying figure.

WARNING: The engine support fixture must be positioned in the center of the cowl and the attaching parts properly tightened before supporting engine. This fixture is not intended to support entire weight of engine and transaxle. Personal injury may result from improper use of support fixture.

3. Remove heater hose clamp at transaxle mount bracket, then disconnect horn wires and remove horn assembly.

CAUTION: Whenever the transaxle mount is removed, alignment bolt M6.0 x 1 x 65 must be installed in right front engine mount to prevent power train misalignment.

4. Remove transaxle mount attaching bolts. Discard mount to side frame attaching bolts.

5. On 1985-88 models, remove clutch slave cylinder from support assembly. On 1982-84 models, disconnect clutch cable at clutch release lever, then remove transaxle mount bracket attaching bolts and nuts.

6. Disconnect shift cables and remove retaining clips at transaxle.

7. Disconnect ground cable at transaxle mounting stud, then remove air management valve attaching bolts (if equipped) to provide clearance for removal of upper right hand transaxle to engine attaching bolt. Remove four upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts.

8. Raise and support vehicle, then remove left front wheel.

9. Remove left front inner splash shield retaining screws and the splash shield.

10. Remove transaxle strut to transaxle bracket and crossmember attaching bolts and remove strut from vehicle.

11. Remove transaxle strut bracket attaching bolts and the strut bracket.

12. Remove clutch housing cover attaching bolts, then disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle.

13. Disconnect stabilizer bar at the left suspension support and control arm.

14. Using tool J-29330, separate left ball joint from steering knuckle.

15. Remove left suspension support to chassis attaching bolts, then remove, the support and power control arm as an assembly.

16. Install boot protectors at drive axles, then disengage both drive axles at transaxle. Remove left drive axle from transaxle housing bore.

17. Attach the transaxle case to a suitable jack, then remove two lower transaxle to engine mounting bolts.

18. Slide transaxle away from engine, lower jack and guide right drive axle from transaxle housing bore. Remove transaxle from vehicle.

19. Reverse removal procedure to install.

NOTE: When installing transaxle, guide the right drive axle into transaxle bore as transaxle is being raised. The right drive axle cannot be installed after the transaxle is connected to engine.
