This bulletin serves to revise the Chart and Facing Page for Code 36 in Section 6E3 "Driveability And Emissions" in the 1988 Cutlass Calais and Firenza Service Manual, for the Cutlass Calais with the (VIN D) 2.3L engine. Please make a reference to this bulletin on pages 6E3-A-54 and 6E3-A-55.
CODE 36
CLOSED THROTTLE AIR FLOW TOO HIGH
Circuit Description: 2.3L (VIN D) "N" SERIES (PORT)
Code 36 is the result of a check intended to detect intake vacuum leaks and sets when:
^ Engine running
^ Calculated air flow greater than a calibrated value
^ TPS signal is less than 3% (about 120 mV above learned zero voltage)
^ IAC valve commanded position is 5 counts (steps) or less
^ Above conditions are met for 5 seconds or more
Diagnostic Aids:
Check for vacuum leaks, unconnected lines, brittle hoses, cuts, etc. Examine manifold and throttle body gaskets for proper seal. Check for cracked intake manifold. Cheek for normal operation of TPS and MAP, as compared to known good cars if necessary.
Check for open in IAC CKTs 441, 442, 443, and 444 or faulty connections at ECM terminals "YC3", "YC4", "YC5" and "YC6" or IAC terminals "A" and "C". An IAC valve which is stopped in an open position and can't respond to the ECM, or minimum air rate throttle stop screw set too high, can also cause Code
36. If no problem is found, and code re-sets, replace ECM.
