Starter Motor: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air induction tube as necessary.
3. Disconnect coolant fan connector and remove coolant fan.
4. Remove oil filter and intake manifold brace.
5. Remove starter bolts and pull starter motor towards the passenger side of vehicle, Fig. 2. On 1989 and some 1990 2.3L/4-138 (VIN A) HO engines, an additional bolt through the starter engine block flange is used.
6. Disconnect electrical connections and remove starter by lifting out between intake manifold and radiator.
7. Reverse procedure to install.
