SSS/CCR/SDD Diagnostic Codes - Resetting After Strut R&R

File In Section: 3 - Steering/Suspension

Bulletin No: 53-33-05

Date: November, 1995

INFORMATION

Subject:
Resetting SSS/CCR/SDD Diagnostic Codes 13-16 or 23-26 Following Strut Replacement

Models:
1992-93 Buick Skylark
1993-95 Buick Park Avenue
1989-92 Cadillac Allante
1991-92 Cadillac Fleetwood
1991-95 Cadillac DeVille
1992-93 Cadillac Eldorado, Seville
1993 Cadillac Sixty Special
1991-95 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight
1992-93 Oldsmobile Achieva
1994-95 Pontiac Bonneville

Condition:

SSS/CCR/SDD Actuator Error Code 13 or 23 (LF), 14 or 24 (RF), 15 or 25 (LR), 16 or 26 (RR) will not reset following strut replacement.

Important:
This condition applies to vehicles with the following suspensions:

^ SSS (Speed Sensitive Suspension), RPO FE1, on Cadillac other than Allante
^ CCR (Computer Command Ride), RPO FW1/FX3, on Buick Oldsmobile, Pontiac
^ SDD (Speed Dependent Damping), RPO FE3, on Allante

Cause:

Resistance across the new strut actuator motor may be outside the specified 20-60 Ohms due to a build-up of tarnish in the actuator motor thus causing the above described condition. Tarnish can form due to strut disuse while in part storage.

Correction:

To correct this condition, place the SSS/CCR/SDD system into output cycling mode for two minutes. The SSS/CCR/SDD Module will continuously cycle all struts through all actuator motor positions while the resistor is in place. Actuator motor position changes will occur every two seconds with the resistor in place. Two minutes of actuator cycling will effectively remove any tarnish that may have developed on the strut motor while in storage.

1989/90 Allante - The output cycling mode may be called up by placing a 1k Ohm resistor across DLC (ALDL) connector pins C (SDD Diagnostic Enable) and A (Ground). VATS Interrogator position 4 or 5 will provide the required 1k Ohm resistance.

Others Listed - The output cycling mode for the other vehicles listed may be called up by placing a 6.6k Ohm resistor across DLC (ALDL) pin as follows: DLC (ALDL) 12-pin connector - pins C (SSS/CCR Diagnostic Enable) and A (Ground)

DLC (ALDL) 16-pin connector - pins 3 (SSS/CCR Diagnostic Enable) and 4 (Ground)

The VATS Interrogator, set to position 12 or 13, may be used to provide the required 6.6k Ohm resistance.

The VATS Interrogator pigtail with green and white leads is the resistance connection. No polarity considerations exist.
