Oil Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL & INSPECTION
1. Remove engine front cover as described under FRONT COVER, then the oil filter adapter, pressure regulator valve and valve spring.
2. Remove oil pump cover attaching screws, cover and gears, Fig. 15.
3. Inspect pump cover and housing for cracks, scoring, porosity and damaged threads, pressure regulator valve and spring for sticking, scoring or tension loss and gears for chipping, galling or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
4. Check gear clearance as follows:
a. Check inner gear tip clearance with feeler gauge as shown in Fig. 16. Maximum clearance should not exceed .006 inch.
b. Check outer gear diameter clearance with feeler gauge as shown in Fig. 17. Clearance should be .008-.015 inch.
c. Check gear end clearance (gear drop in housing) with suitable dial indicator as shown in Fig. 18. Clearance should be .001-.0035 inch.
5. Replace parts as necessary.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate gears with petroleum jelly, then install into oil pump housing.
2. Pack pump cavity with petroleum jelly, then install pump cover and attaching screws. Torque attaching screws to 97 inch lbs.
3. Install pressure regulator valve spring and valve.
4. Install oil filter adapter using new gasket. Torque adapter to 24 ft.lbs.
5. Reinstall front cover onto engine.
