Suspension - Front Coil Spring Clatter or Rattle

CONDITION:
Some front suspension coil springs may seem to rattle or clatter when the vehicle is in motion.

CAUSE:
Contact between the first and second coils at the upper (large) end of the coil spring. This contact occurs between 1/4 and 1/2 of a turn from the end of the coil spring on the coil directly below it.

CORRECTION:
Install coil sleeve, P/N 22077538 at 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 wraps (or coil turns) from the large end of spring.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

1. Drive vehicle and verify noise.
2. Determine if spring already has a coil sleeve.
3. If no coil sleeve is present:
A. Inspect upper coil spring for witness marks or signs of interference.





B. If signs of contact are found, apply adhesive (3M #51135-08662 or equivalent) to inside of sleeve, press sleeve onto spring and slide up until sleeve hits pinch point between upper two coils. See Figure #1.
C. Drive vehicle to verify that noise is eliminated.
D. If noise still exists, some other condition is present.
4. If coil sleeve already is present:
A. Verify location of coil sleeve.
B. If sleeve is in wrong location, follow step 3.
C. If sleeve is in correct location, some other condition is present.
