Fig. 6 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove intake manifold as described under INTAKE MANIFOLD.
3. Remove exhaust manifold as described under EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
4. Remove valve covers, then disconnect spark plug wires.
5. If right hand cylinder is to be removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove power steering pump and position aside with hose attached.
b. Remove belt tensioner assembly.
6. If left hand cylinder head is to be removed, proceed as follows:
a. Remove alternator bracket with ignition module and coil units attached.
b. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolt from cylinder head.
7. Remove rocker arm assemblies, guide plate and push rods.
8. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts and cylinder heads.
9. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Clean threads in the block using a 7/16-14 tap, then clean bolt threads.
b. Apply sealant 1052080 or equivalent, to the underside of the bolt heads.
c. Apply thread locker 12345382 or equivalent, to the bolt threads.
d. Install cylinder head bolts and tighten in sequence shown in Fig. 6. Torque each cylinder head bolt to 35 ft. lbs., then tighten an additional 130° using torque angle meter No. J-36660. Tighten the center four cylinder head attaching bolts an additional 30 degrees using torque angle meter J-36660.
