Starter Motor: Service and Repair



Starter Replacement






Remove or Disconnect

1. Air cleaner assembly.

Caution: Failing to disconnect the negative battery cable may result in an injury. If a tool is shorted at the solenoid battery terminal. the tool will heat enough to cause skin burn.

2. Negative battery cable at the battery.
3. Raise the vehicle and suitably support.
- With engine oil cooler:
A. Drain pan under engine oil pan.
B. Oil Filter.
C. Position hose next to the starter motor aside.
4. Bolts from flywheel inspection cover.
5. Inspection cover.
6. Nut from brace at A/C compressor.
7. Nut from brace at engine and brace.
8. Starter mounting bolts.
9. Starter motor and shims (if used).
10. Electrical connections from starter.

Install or Connect

1. Electrical connections to starter.
- Tighten battery terminal nut to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.)
- Tighten "S" terminal nut to 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.)
2. Shims (if used) and starter motor.
3. Starter to engine.
- Tighten bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.).
- With engine oil cooler:
A. Properly position the hose next to the starter motor.
B. Install oil filter.
C. Remove drain pan.
4. Brace and nut to engine.
5. Nut to brace at A/C compressor.
- Tighten nuts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
6. Inspection cover.
7. Bolts to flywheel inspection cover.
- Tighten bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
8. Remove support and lower the vehicle.
9. Negative battery cable at battery.
- Tighten cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
10. Air cleaner assembly.
- Inspect engine oil level and adjust as necessary.
