Clutch & Differential Housing
Remove bearing and bushings only if there is evidence of damage or a mating part is being replaced.
1. Remove bolts (159), washers (162), plate(164) and spacers (163).
2. Remove shift rail bushings (175) using shift rail bushing remover/installer tool Nos. J-36029-1, J-36029-2 and universal drive handle tool No. J-36190, or equivalents.
3. Remove reverse shift rail guide bolt (23) and guide (24).
4. Remove clutch cylinder mounting studs (210), transaxle housing vent pipe (165) and clutch housing vent boot (213).
5. Remove clutch fork nut (214), fork (216) and pivot (215).
6. Remove clutch fork assembly pivot bolt (217), noting lefthand threads.
7. Remove bearing sleeve snap ring (26), then the bearing sleeve assembly (27) and 0-ring (124) using input bearing assembly remover/installer tool No. J-35824, bearing and sleeve assembly remover/installer tool No. J-36039 (inside of input bearing remover/installer tool) and universal drive handle too No. J-36190, or equivalents.
8. Remove differential carrier bearing race (77) using output shaft/differential bearing race remover tool No. J-39374 and slide hammer and adapter set tool No. J-23907, or equivalents, and shim (74).
9. Remove output shaft bearing race (59) using output shaft differential bearing race remover tool No. J-39374 and slide hammer and slide hammer and adapter set tool No. J-23907, or equivalents, and shim (122).
10. Remove case guide pins (79) with a suitable punch.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply a small amount of thread locker to shift rail interlock plate bolts (159), then tighten bolts to 15 lbs. ft.
b. Apply a small amount of thread locker to clutch fork assembly pivot bolt (217), then tighten to 20 lbs. ft.
c. Install new 0-ring (124) on input shaft bearing sleeve assembly (27).
d. Tighten clutch fork pivot nut (214) to 17 lbs. ft.
e. Select appropriate output shaft bearing race shim (122) and differential bearing race shim (74) a outlined under "Shim Selection." Refer to Shim Selection.
f. If either differential bearing race (77) is removed, refer to "Differential & Output Shaft Preload Shim" procedure shown under "Shim Selection." Refer to Shim Selection.
