Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

Fuel Filter:

Quick-Connect Fittings:

REMOVE/DISCONNECT

- Relieve fuel system pressure.
- Raise vehicle on a hoist.
- Filter attaching screw and filter.

NOTE If the nylon fuel feed or return connecting lines become kinked, and cannot be straightened, they must be replaced.

- Grasp filter and one nylon fuel connecting line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within fitting. Repeat with other fitting.

WARNING Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
^ Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the filter.

- Quick-connect fittings:
^ Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male end connector and pull connection apart. Repeat for other end of filter.
- Fuel filter.

WARNING To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury:
^ Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube end of the filter and the fuel level meter assembly. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).
^ If a new fuel filter or filter line is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced.

INSTALL/CONNECT
- Remove protective caps from new filter.
- New plastic connector retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes.
^ Install in the same positions as on the old filter.
- To connect the quick connect fittings:
a. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends of the filter and of the fuel level meter assembly.
b. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap in place.
c. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure they are secure.
- Secure the fuel filter on the frame with the fuel filter attaching screw.
- Fuel filler cap.
- Negative battery cable.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 2 seconds, then turn to OFF for 5 seconds. Again turn to the ON position and check for fuel leaks.
