Cylinder Head - Installation

Cylinder Head And Valve Train:






INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Clean threads in the block using a 7/16-1/4" tap.
2. Clean bolt threads using a wire brush.
3. Install head gasket with arrow pointing to front of engine.

NOTE: Head gaskets are not interchangeable. Failure to install with arrow pointing to front will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.

4. Apply sealant GM P/N 1052080 or equivalent to underside of the bolt heads.
5. Apply thread locker GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent to bolt threads.

CAUTION: This engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. This design bolt requires a special tightening procedure. Failure to follow the given procedure will cause head gasket failure and possible engine damage.
6. Cylinder head bolts.

Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:






7. Tighten cylinder head bolts to 47 Nm (35 lbs. ft.) in the sequence shown.
8. Rotate each bolt 130 degrees in sequence using J 36660 or equivalent.
9. Rotate the center four bolts an additional 30 degrees in sequence using J 36660 or equivalent.
10. Pushrods, guide plate and rocker arm assemblies
- Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to rocker arm pedestal bolts before assembly.
- Tighten rocker arm pedestal bolts to 25 Nm (19 lbs. ft) + 70°.

Intake Manifold Bolt Tightening Sequence:






11. Intake manifold.
- Tighten bolts to 10 Nm (88 lbs. in.) twice in given sequence. Refer to Intake Manifold. Service and Repair
12. Valve cover.
- Tighten bolts to 10 Nm (88 lbs. in). Refer to Valve Cover. Service and Repair
13. Exhaust manifold.
- Tighten bolts to 52 Nm (38 lbs. ft.). Refer to Exhaust Manifold. Service and Repair
14. A/C compressor bracket bolt to 70 Nm (52 lbs. ft.).
15. Generator support bracket to cylinder head.
16. Generator.
17. Electronic ignition and spark plug wires.
18. Belt- tensioner assembly.
19. Power steering pump.
20. Fuel pipe heat shield.
