Steering Column Repair
Safe handling of steering wheel module requires adhering to following procedures for both live and deployed steering wheel modules.
Always wear safety glasses when servicing an inflatable restraint system vehicle and when handling a steering wheel module.
The following components cannot be repaired, as these components are serviced only by replacement.
1. Forward sensor
2. Arming sensor
3. Power supply
4. Diagnostic energy reserve module (DERM)
5. SIR control module
6. Coil assembly
7. Steering wheel module
When the steering wheel module is replaced due to deployment, both the SIR control module and the arming sensor must also be replaced. Any SIR system components, harness or brackets damaged or bent in an accident must be replaced. Inspect steering column and knee bolster for damage.
Do not attempt to repair steering column coil assembly, forward sensor, arming sensor, power supply, SIR control module, steering wheel module or energy reserve module, as these are serviced by replacement only.
Before servicing SIR system, wait 10 minutes after disconnecting battery voltage before continuing.
If vehicle is equipped with passenger power seat, do not connect seat power feed harness to SIR control module terminal connector.
