Some vehicles may exhibit a "Gear Select Problem" message or flashing PRNDL with a E31 or B127 code. This code may result in inoperative cruise control and/or torque converter clutch. The vehicle continues to start only in park or neutral.

These conditions may be caused by the neutral start backup switch.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

All 1991 vehicles and 1992 vehicles prior to vehicle number NU303173, replace the neutral start backup switch with P/N 1994334 (currently available from GMSPO). See Section 7A1 in the appropriate service manual for the replacement procedure.

1992 Vehicles built after the breakpoint are equipped with the new parts. Refer to code E31 B127 diagnosis in Section 6E3 or 8D2 of the service manual for diagnostic procedures.

For warranty purposes use Labor Operation J6383 for neutral start backup switch replacement.

Note:

Do not adjust the shift indicator needle linkage (Labor Operation K5243) to correct a code E31, B127.
